Title:

Chernobyl: The nuclear disaster

Rights-Managed, Footage

Location and time:

Soviet Union, Chernobyl, 26-04-1986

Description:

The Chernobyl accident occurred on April 26th, 1986, at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine (then part of the Soviet Union). It is regarded as the worst nuclear accident in the history of nuclear power. It produced a plume of radioactive debris that drifted over parts of the western Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, and Scandinavia. Large areas of Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia were contaminated resulting in the evacuation and resettlement of roughly 200,000 people. About 60 percent of radioactive fallout landed in Belarus. The accident raised concerns about the safety of the Soviet nuclear power industry, slowing its expansion for a number of years, while forcing the Soviet government to become less secretive. The now-separate countries of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus have been burdened with continuing and substantial costs for decontamination and health care because of the Chernobyl accident.

Sound Bite and conversation:

Steinberg, Nikolai

(Head of the nuclear power plant of Chernobyl after the disaster) , speaking Russian:
-  "The security system of the reactor, which should have slowed down the process, was unfortunately built so that under certain conditions the brakes reacted as accelerator pedals. So when they wanted to switch off the reactor and “stepped onto the brake”, they actually opened the throttle and the reactor blew up. "

Steinberg, Nikolai

(Head of the nuclear power plant of Chernobyl after the disaster) , speaking Russian:
-  "The closing report was phrased to show a picture to the world which blamed those working during that shift – but in a way which emphasized that there was no problem with the technical equipment."

Genrich, Oleg

(Operator in block nr 4. in the nuclear disaster: Chernobyl) , speaking Russian:
-  "After around 9 days, our skin started to turn red on our arms and legs, etc. Our hair started to fall out. If we could get up, we could also walk. But then very soon, we couldn’t even get up, and in the end, we had to be fed. This was the worst, the helplessness and the pain. Severe pain…"

Samojlenko, Juri

(First engineer of the restoring works) , speaking Russian:
-  "Nobody was enthusiastic about doing this, but this was our profession, and we knew, there was no other choice. For many years these people, whom I sent to death, appeared in my dreams. There were 5000 of them."

Samojlenko, Juri

(First engineer of the restoring works) , speaking Russian:
-  "Just imagine that the guys started to dig, and at one point they found a container including heater elements. Of course, they got a huge dose of radiation. Well, it was not exactly a macaroni factory…unfortunately these kind of things happened, that’s the way it is."

Turovets, Katya

(resident in Chernobyl, 1986) , speaking Russian:
-  "What can we take in one suitcase? It was one suitcase and three children. I packed for the children - that was all. I went away in a jacket and house slippers, just, as I was. There was no time to change."

Seibel, Claus

(ZDF reporter) , speaking German:
-  "Until today the Soviet Union has not fulfilled the demands of European governments to publish exact data about the disaster. "

Turovets, Katya

(resident in Chernobyl, 1986) , speaking Russian:
-  "That Saturday everybody was walking like always on the streets. We have a little river where you can row. We were sitting almost the whole day in these boats. A lot of women and a 16-year-old girl, too. It was very nice weather.."

Genrich, Oleg

(Operator in block nr 4. in the nuclear disaster: Chernobyl) , speaking Russian:
-  "I did not understand what was happening. I was in a state, thinking that I was in a different world. This just could not happen to me. Then I packed my stuff with the thought that I am still alive and everything is okay. Then I heard the screaming of my colleagues."

Kuzmin, Igor

(Physics professor at Kurtchatov Institute ) , speaking Russian:
-  "It was a bad sign, a signal from the next century. A warning that we had to change our relationship with technique."

Genrich, Oleg

(Operator in block nr 4. in the nuclear disaster: Chernobyl) , speaking Russian:
-  "Just like always, the performance of the reactor was reduced. I didn’t know about any experiments or security checks. I did my job that night, just as always, and everything seemed normal."

Steinberg, Nikolai

(Head of the nuclear power plant of Chernobyl after the disaster) , speaking Russian:
-  "It could be explained by our mentality. Duty at all lcosts. This meant: instead of stopping the reactor, they continued in order to finish off the experiment they had planned for that night. "

Steinberg, Nikolai

(Head of the nuclear power plant of Chernobyl after the disaster) , speaking Russian:
-  "01:23:04 a.m. The actual experiment began. 01:23:40 am: the decision was made that the experiment should be cut and the reactor would be stopped immediately. After giving out the command to press the power-off button, 3 full seconds passed until the explosion. "

Kuzmin, Igor

(Physics professor at Kurtchatov Institute ) , speaking Russian:
-  "Chernobyl proved for the first time that secrecy no longer worked in the Soviet Union. This was actually Glasnost, the beginning of the politics of information, which was started by Gorbachov, and its consequences are known by all of us – up to the demolition of the Berlin wall."
