Berlin, 1920's: animal transport by train, slaughterhouse

Berlin, 1920's: animal transport by train In January 1919 the leftist Spartacus-rebellion is put down bloodily. Free corps troops abduct Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg on January 15th and kill them at the “Tiergarten”. On March 13, 1920 parts of the “Reichswehr” (empire’s army) overthrow their break-up as ordered by the “Versailler Vertrag” (Versaille agreement) and proclaim the rightist conservative Wolfgang Kapp imperial chancellor. A general strike organized by SPD and KPD leads to the collapse of the Kapp-Putsch. In October of 1920 7 cities, 59 country communities and 27 property districts are being suburbanized to Berlin by law and the city is divided into 20 districts. The population is now 3.8 million, the size 878 square kilometers. Berlin becomes Europe’s largest industrial city and turns out to be a cultural metropolis in the Twenties. Artists such as Otto Dix, Lionel Feininger, Bertolt Brecht and Arnold Zweig and Nobel Prize laureate Albert Einstein live and work in Berlin. In 1923 inflation is at its peak level. In 1924 the „1. Große Deutsche Funkausstellung“ (first big German radio exhibition) inaugurates on the fairgrounds. In 1926 the first “Grüne Woche”(agricultural exhibition) takes place. In August of 1928 the debut performance of “The Threepenny Opera” by B. Brecht occurs in the theater at the “Schiffbauerdamm”. About 150 daily and weekly papers are released in the city. The global economic crisis seizes Berlin in 1929. There are 450.000 people jobless in February.

California: sea world - dolphin show, flamingos

California: sea world SeaWorld is a United States chain of marine mammal parks, oceanariums, and animal theme parks owned by SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment. The parks feature captive orca, sea lion, and dolphin shows and zoological displays featuring various other marine animals. There are operations in Orlando, Florida; San Diego, California; San Antonio, Texas; and previously Aurora, Ohio. On March 5, 2007, SeaWorld Orlando announced addition of the Aquatica water park to its adventure park family, which already includes SeaWorld and Discovery Cove. On February 28, 2008, Busch Entertainment announced plans to open a fourth SeaWorld park in Dubai, UAE, but these plans have been shelved for now due to the international credit freeze. SeaWorld parks also feature a variety of thrill rides, including roller coasters like Kraken and Manta at SeaWorld Orlando and Steel Eel and The Great White at SeaWorld San Antonio. Journey to Atlantis, a combination roller coaster and splashdown ride, can be found at all three US parks. The parks were owned by Busch Entertainment Corp., the family entertainment division of Anheuser-Busch, which is best known for brewing beer. In November, 2009, Busch Entertainment was sold to the Blackstone Group and subsequently renamed SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment. Some of the Budweiser Clydesdales are also kept at each park as an additional non-marine-oriented attraction. One of the biggest attractions is the Shark Encounter, in which guests are carried through a submerged acrylic tube into the sharks' tank. Another famous ride is Wild Arctic, simulating a helicopter ride to the Arctic. After the ride, the guests arrive at a simulated base station, where they can observe polar bears, Pacific walruses, and beluga whales. During the Christmas holiday season, SeaWorld Orlando's Wild Arctic is transformed into the Polar Express Experience which offers the park's guests the opportunity to ride the Polar Express to the North Pole and meet Santa Claus in addition to the polar bears, Pacific walruses, and beluga whales that are at the Wild Arctic exhibit year round. Another attraction is the Penguin Encounter, showcasing a variety of penguins. In addition, an attraction features endangered Florida manatees. The park has an extensive playground for children, named Shamu’s Happy Harbor, formerly known as Cap'n Kids World. (Although SeaWorld San Diego has Sesame Street Bay of Play which showcases Sesame Street characters.) SeaWorld recently created the non-profit SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund. Sea World is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, meaning they have met and exceeded the standards in Education, Conservation and Research.[vague]

Canary Islands, Fuerteventura: La Rosita - Frontage, landscape, camels

Canary islands, Fuerteventura: La Rosita - Frontage, landscape, camels The Canary Islands are a Spanish archipelago located just off the northwest coast of mainland Africa, 100 km west of the border between Morocco and the Western Sahara. The Canaries are a Spanish Autonomous Community and an Outermost Region of the European Union. The islands include (from largest to smallest): Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, La Graciosa, Alegranza and Montaña Clara. The archipelago's beaches, climate and important natural attractions, especially Teide National Park and Mount Teide (the third largest volcano in the world), make it a major tourist destination, with over 12 million visitors per year, especially Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. The islands have a sub-tropical climate, with long hot days in summer and cooler days in winter. The capital for the Autonomous Community is shared by the cities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which in turn are the capitals of the provinces of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas. Until 1927 Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the only capital. The third largest city of the Canary Islands is San Cristóbal de La Laguna (City World Heritage Site) on the island of Tenerife. During the times of the Spanish Empire the Canaries were the main stopover for Spanish galleons on their way to America because of the favorable easterly winds.

Canary Islands, Lanzarote: Timanfaya - Camels walking in the desert

Canary Islands, Lanzarote: Timanfaya - Camels walking in the desert The Montañas del Fuego (Fire Mountains) were created between 1730 and 1736 when more than 100 volcanoes, covering more than 50 km², rose up and devastated this part of the island (including several villages). The last eruptions were in 1824, however due to the low rainfall (and therefore lack of erosion) this area appears much the same as it did just after the eruptions. In 1968 the area was declared a national park, Parque Nacional de Timanfaya. This part of the island is a must for any visitor to the island because of its unique 'Martian' landscape and rare plant species. After you arrive at the visitors Car Park you will witness several demonstrations of 'how hot' the area is (temperatures just a few metres below the surface reach between 400°C and 600°C). Dry brush thrown into a hole in the ground catches fire immediately, while water poured into a bore hole erupts seconds later in the form of steam - like a mini-geyser.

Worldwide

Carnivorous plants

Carnivorous plants are plants that get a part of their nutrition from the bodies of animals. They trap mainly insects and other arthropods. Usually they grow in places where the soil is thin or low in nutrients. There are more than a dozen carnivorous families of flowering plants with hundreds of species already classified. Each traps their prey, produces digestive enzymes and absorbs nutrients.
