1990 - The German unit: the union of the two German States

Rights-Managed, Editorial

Location and time:

Germany, Berlin, 03-10-1990

German reunification took place on October 3, 1990, when the areas of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR – in English often called „East Germany”) were incorporated into The Federal Republic of Germany („West Germany”). After the GDRs first free elections on 18 March 1990, negotiations between the GDR and FRG culminated in a Unification Treaty, whilst negotiations between the GDR and FRG and four occupying powers produced the so-called „Two Plus Four Treaty” granting full independence to a reunified German state. The reunified Germany remained a member of the European Community and Nato. The term „reunification” is used in contrast with initial unification of Germany in 1871.

-  "Nobody knows yet how the reunited Germany will look, but that the reunification will happen if the German people so wish, of that I am sure. "

Kohl, Helmut

(Federal Chancellor) , speaking German:
-  "Western Europe’s behaviour was very icy. To phrase it cautiously, Mitterrand was offended, and my British collegue was wild, to put it mildly. Others, like the Italians, were indignant. "

Kohl, Helmut
